Riverbed Steelhead Appliances
Riverbed provides industry-leading WAN optimisation through its Steelhead appliances, which speed application performance and data transfer over the WAN, overcoming bandwidth and latency problems to deliver the highest performance available on the market today.
The Riverbed solution addresses performance limitations using a multi-tiered approach including TCP optimisation, application protocol acceleration, and data reduction to deliver unparalleled performance over the WAN.
Riverbed Steelheads go beyond a simple WAN optimisation solution making the IT infrastructure run faster, better and more securely at data centre, branch office, laptop and public and private cloud level.
Riverbed Steelhead CX Series – Dedicated WAN Optimisation Appliances
The Riverbed Steelhead CX series, like its predecessors in the xx50 series, overcomes bandwidth and geographic limitations to make users more productive, data transfers faster, and applications perform seamlessly regardless of location. However, the Steelhead CX series of appliances offers more capacity and throughput than previous Steelhead appliances at the same total cost of ownership.
These dedicated appliances are designed to provide the highest performing and most scalable WAN optimisation solutions for any sized environment. Purpose built and singularly focused on delivering the speed, scale, and simplicity that are hallmarks of the Riverbed product family, the Steelhead CX series is powered by the Riverbed Optimisation System (RiOS) that thousands of organisations rely upon to deliver LAN-like performance across the WAN.
Riverbed Steelhead CX Series Benefits
- Acceleration of key enterprise applications by up to 100 times
- IT infrastructure consolidation and virtualisation
- Reduced bandwidth utilisation by 60% to 95% using advanced data reduction processes, often deferring additional bandwidth upgrades
- Enhanced data protection enabling speedy, resilient and secure replication and backup over the WAN, often reducing replication times from hours to minutes
- Cost effective deployment with more robust specifications and the power of RiOS to improve disaster recovery/replication performance and enable greater consolidation to the data center without sacrificing performance

Riverbed Steelhead EX Series – Multi-function, Enterprise-class Branch Office Appliance
The Riverbed Steelhead EX series builds on Riverbed’s award-winning WAN optimisation solution, and adds to that a robust platform with more memory, disk, and CPU to support the Riverbed Virtual Services Platform (VSP) and Riverbed Granite. In addition, every appliance in the Riverbed Steelhead EX series is supported by high-performance solid state drives (SSDs).
Riverbed Steelhead EX Series Benefits
Branch Office Consolidation:
Every Riverbed Steelhead EX appliance features the VSP, similar to the Riverbed Services Platform (RSP) that runs on the xx50 series, which has a dedicated platform that runs virtual services and enables greater consolidation in branch offices. With the VSP, each appliance is designed to leverage VMware virtualisation technology to run virtualised instances of an organisation’s own services, including DNS, DHCP, Active Directory, print serving, streaming media, security service or 3rd party software.

Remote Server and Storage Consolidation to the Data Centre:
The Riverbed Steelhead EX series can also be upgraded to include Riverbed Granite. This revolutionary new product enables a new architectural approach called edge Virtual Server Infrastructure (edge-VSI) that does for edge servers what virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) did for desktops: it allows IT to consolidate and manage all edge servers in the Data Centre and delivers 20-50% lower total cost of ownership (TCO).
Riverbed Steelhead EX Series Benefits
-
High performance hardware: significant memory, disk, and CPU to support the most intensive workloads with high performance SSDs
- RiOS WAN Optimisation: accelerate applications up to 100x faster while reducing bandwidth demands by up to 60-99%
- Riverbed Virtual Services Platform – VMware-based platform that runs virtually any local service or application on a single box
- Granite Capable – Allows centralised storage over the WAN at LAN-like speeds
